She said the company lent money for all cars, including second-hand cars, but rarely financed cheaper models.

The company tried 'extremely hard' to come to repayment arrangements to avoid repossession, she said.

Bankruptcy expert Peter Malone of CRS Warner Kugel said creditors could, through a bankruptcy trustee, seize a debtor's assets, including the family home, cash or shares.

He said creditors could repossess and sell cars, but debtors would owe money on the shortfall. People could be made bankrupt for as little as $5000, he said.

The Sunday Herald Sun inspected 32 BMW actions in the Federal Magistrates' Court, where the debts ranged from $8000 to $190,000, with most in the $30,000-plus range.

One man, who did not want to be named, said he was holding a $110,000-a-year job when he bought a $80,000 Lexus, all on credit.

'Then I lost my job and couldn't pay $1000 a month - it was a rude awakening,' the 34-year-old said.

The club is part of a group of companies based in Memphis, Tennessee, where the bankruptcy petition was filed. Other B.B. King locations in Memphis; Nashville; Orlando, Florida; and West Palm Beach, Florida are not involved in the filing.

A lawyer for the debtor did not immediately return a call on Friday seeking a comment."

JPMorgan Says Lehman Left It `Goat Poo' Collateral

JPMorgan Says Lehman Left It `Goat Poo' Collateral - Bloomberg: "Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. tricked JPMorgan Chase & Co. into holding onto collateral that the bankrupt investment firm internally described as “goat poo,” according to a court filing by JPMorgan.

JPMorgan was stuck with Lehman’s worst securities backing $25 billion of loans as Lehman was sold to Barclays Plc in September 2008, JPMorgan said in its filing yesterday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan. Lehman described the collateral as “toxic crap” and “goat poo” to be scattered “in other people’s backyards,” JPMorgan said.

“Only later was JPMorgan able to determine that the position in which it unexpectedly found itself was the result of collusion and deception” by Lehman and Barclays, JPMorgan said.

The accusations appeared in amended counterclaims against Lehman in its lawsuit against JPMorgan. Both companies are based in New York."

Bankrupt former Scotland star Colin Hendry to repay just £36k of £2.2m debts

Bankrupt former Scotland star Colin Hendry to repay just £36k of £2.2m debts - The Daily Record: "Bankrupt Colin Hendry will repay just £36,000 of his £2.2million debts.
Former Scotland captain Hendry has struck a deal to avoid repaying more than 98 per cent of what he owes - including the vast majority of his unpaid bills with a spread betting firm.
Hendry was declared insolvent last June after turning to drink and gambling as he mourned wife Denise.
Now the accountant overseeing his bankruptcy has written to his creditors to tell them the star will only pay back £1000 per month for three years - a total of £36,000.
Former pal Hector McFarlane - who claims Hendry borrowed £95,000 from him despite knowing he was about to go bust - is horrified by the agreement.
'I am just flabbergasted,' he said last night.
'I stand to get back £1800 of the money I loaned him. It's an absolute disgrace.'"

Bankruptcy tourism draws debt-stricken Irish

Bankruptcy tourism draws debt-stricken Irish | Business | The Guardian: "Niall is 31 and manager of a successful fruit farm just outside Dublin. He is thinking of emigrating to England – not because he is out of work but because he is so heavily in debt that he wants to declare himself bankrupt.

He bought three houses as a buy-to-let sideline between 2004 and 2006. Although he earned a modest salary of €25,000 a year (less than £17,000 then), the banks gave him two mortgages of more than €300,000 and another one for more than €200,000 – a loan-book worth 32 times his salary.

The fantasy of becoming a property millionaire did not last long and now the farm manager is in negative equity to the tune of €250,000 and with a glut of empty properties on the market, he has no hope of meeting monthly repayments from rent."
