Thirty-eight people have been arrested in a crackdown led by the RCMP early Wednesday on an international bank-card cloning ring in the Montreal region, an RCMP spokesman said. About 250 police officers, most of them Mounties, were expected to round up 61 suspects by later in the day, as the officers executed search warrants at 60 addresses, RCMP Const. Erique Gasse said. The ring has been under investigation since November 2008, he said, and is alleged to have siphoned about $100 million by cloning debit and credit cards.
